These "green screen" images were taken during Marine Science Day on May 19th, then placed into selected research scenes by photo experts in VIMS' Communications Department. Alert issued for Chinese mitten crabs

Recent reports of live Chinese Mitten Crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) in Chesapeake Bay have led Bay scientists to issue a public alert for this non-native species. The crab, a native of East Asia, is a potential invasive that could have negative ecological impacts on the Bay and its tributaries

Scientists discover new life in Antarctic deep

A new study in Nature by an international research team including VIMS Professor Robert Diaz reports the discovery of hundreds of new marine species in the vast, dark deep-sea surrounding Antarctica. Carnivorous sponges, free-swimming worms, crustaceans, and molluscs living in the Weddell Sea provide new insights into the evolution of ocean life.
